The Inn at Fossebridge now seeks bio-diesel solution to reduce costs and carbon emissions.

The Inn at Fossebridge near Cirencester hopes to cut carbon emissions from its heat and light system by adopting an advanced bio-diesel system to generate electricity. Oil plus electricity from the National Grid currently costs £2,000 per month.

Early indications are that although the scheme will cost over £40,000 the capital costs could be recovered in about seven years, possibly only four if new legislation produces greater bonus payments to organisations that have switched from fossil fuels.

Robert Jenkins, who has fully restored the inn and gained four star accreditation since acquisition three years ago, tried to install a water wheel in the River Coln, which flows through the inn's grounds, to create electricity.

Studies found, however, that the depth of the river was inadequate to support a water wheel system.

Now engineers from Segen, the alternative energy specialists in Stroud, believe they have found the answer to Robert's requirements for much reduced power costs and a big cut in carbon emissions.

He explained:" Everyone at the inn enjoys the Cotswolds environment and have been concerned that our efforts to upgrade an almost derelict property to AA four star should not effect the environment in the process".

Mr Jenkins added:" We are very optimistic that this project will go ahead and meet all our requirements. Early indications are that work could begin in the Autumn we have also been promised there will be minimum disruption".

The Inn at Fossebridge is 300 years old and was renowned as a coaching inn along the Fosseway from Bath to the Midlands and beyond.

It has eight fully refurbished bedrooms and a much sought after menu created by Robert's daughter Liz, a Pru Leith graduate, and head chef Laurent Guillery.
